Welcome to another delightful event hosted by Lexxie, at (un)Conventional Book Views.

Thirsty Thursday and Hungry Hearts is a guilty pleasure for me.

Here’s the premise:

The idea of Thirsty Thursday and Hungry Hearts is to share a quote with food or drinks that showed up in a recent read, as well as if it’s something you think you’d like or not. Please share the title of the book it happened in, as well as the character who ate or drank the special little something you discovered between the pages of a good read. Please link up beneath, and visit other bloggers who are participating in Thirsty Thursday and Hungry Hearts as well.

Currently I am reading The Good Goodbye, by Carla Buckley, a sad story of a family gone awry…and what happens when disturbing truths come to light. (The book is an ARC from Amazon Vine).

In this passage, Natalie, a wife and mother who co-owns a restaurant with her brother-in-law Vince, is doing what she does when she is under stress:

(From daughter Arden’s POV): “After Uncle Vince lost our money, she’d come home from Double, tie on her apron, and start cooking.  Whenever she’s upset or worried, that’s what she does—head straight to the kitchen.  Once it was beef vegetable soup, another time dim sum.  This time it was croissants, and this phase lasted for weeks.  She set out a dish of malt and flour and sugar to draw the yeast straight out of the air—magic!  Layering and buttering, rolling with the heavy wooden pin, proofing in the big plastic bin.  In the early morning hours, I’d come downstairs and find her pulling another pan from the oven.  We’d sit, just the two of us, with sweet butter and homemade apricot preserves, a jar of Nutella.  We’ll figure it out, she told me, over and over.”

For a book set in a restaurant, it was challenging to find anything about food!  But in the midst of tragedy, Arden recalls these special moments.

What do you think?  What goodies are you sharing today?
