Good morning, and welcome to another Thirsty Thursday & Hungry Hearts event, hosted by Lexxie at (un)Conventional Bookviews.

Here is how it works:

The idea of Thirsty Thursday and Hungry Hearts is to share a quote with food or drinks that showed up in a recent read, as well as if it’s something you think you’d like or not. Please share the title of the book it happened in, as well as the character who ate or drank the special little something you discovered between the pages of a good read. Please link up beneath, and visit other bloggers who are participating in Thirsty Thursday and Hungry Hearts as well.

Mine today comes from a book I just started reading:  Rainy Day Sisters, by Kate Hewitt.

In this excerpt, Lucy Bagshaw has just had the worst year ever, and has left Boston to stay with her half-sister Juliet in England’s Lake District.  Juliet runs a B & B, and Lucy is longing for some nurturing.  But she doesn’t quite find that feeling, as there is nothing much to eat at the B & B, and Lucy grudgingly accompanies her sister to a cafe nearby.

“Juliet could tell Lucy was a bit nonplussed by the shabby, muggy warmth of the cafe, the windows that overlooked the frothing sea fogged up.  The small room was scattered with tables with peeling tops and rickety chairs, and only a handful of patrons.  It wasn’t some upscale Boston bistro, that was for certain.

“Mary, the cafe’s owner and a buxom woman with flyaway white hair and a booming laugh, handed them a grease-splattered laminated menu upon their arrival; Juliet had tied the dogs up outside.

” ‘What can I do you, Juliet?’

” ‘A cup of coffee and a toasted ham and cheese, please, Mary.’  She glanced at Lucy.  ‘What would you like?’

” ‘I’ll have the same.’ “

As much as Lucy had looked forward to nurturing and cozy comforts, it sounds like her sister is very casual and matter-of-fact.  It will be interesting to see what happens next.  Actually, the toasted ham and cheese doesn’t sound bad.
