Welcome to another Thirsty Thursday & Hungry Hearts, hosted by Lexxie, at (un)Conventional Bookviews.
The idea of Thirsty Thursday and Hungry Hearts is to share a quote with food or drinks that showed up in a recent read, as well as if it’s something you think you’d like or not. Please share the title of the book it happened in, as well as the character who ate or drank the special little something you discovered between the pages of a good read. Please link up beneath, and visit other bloggers who are participating in Thirsty Thursday and Hungry Hearts as well.
Today I am featuring a book I shared a few weeks ago, when our MC was a small child and remembering dinners at home. House of Wonder, by Sarah Healy.
Now she is grown and revisiting the neighborhood where she grew up…and one of her old high school flames, who still lives there, has taken her out to dinner. Bobby Vanni and Jenna Parsons are enjoying this meal:
A beautiful older woman with caramel-colored skin and Sophia Loren glasses came out, and without a word, she set down a single plate. “Some pickled beets from the kitchen,” she said in a heavy Italian accent; then she winked at me. “For sharing.”
Bobby and I smiled at each other, and with his fork, he cut one of the beet slices in half. Stabbing it with the tines, he swirled it in the little puddle of magenta brine at the bottom of the plate, and then handed the fork to me, watching me as I took a bite. Mr. Vanni used to be like that, a man who loved to indulge people, loved to watch them enjoy themselves. I smiled and covered my mouth with my hand. “Delicious,” I said, handing Bobby back his fork.
There was more to the dinner, but I especially liked the sensual sharing of the beets, and now I have a new perspective on them.
What are you sharing today?
