THIRSTY THURSDAY & HUNGRY HEARTS: A BREAKFAST TREAT

Welcome to another Thirsty Thursday & Hungry Hearts, hosted by Lexxie, at (un)Conventional Bookviews.

The idea of Thirsty Thursday and Hungry Hearts is to share a quote with food or drinks that showed up in a recent read, as well as if it’s something you think you’d like or not. Please share the title of the book it happened in, as well as the character who ate or drank the special little something you discovered between the pages of a good read. Please link up beneath, and visit other bloggers who are participating in Thirsty Thursday and Hungry Hearts as well.

Today I picked up a book that I’ll be rereading, one I enjoyed a few years ago from a favorite author:  Elizabeth Berg’s Open House.

Our food offering is brought to us from the first chapter, after our MC, Samantha, has realized that her marriage to David is breaking up.  But she tries to go on, planning a normal morning for her eleven-year-old son Travis.

“I go into the kitchen to make a strong pot of coffee and to start Travis’s breakfast.  French toast he’ll have today, made from scratch, cut diagonally, one piece lying artfully over the other; and I’ll heat the syrup, serve it in the tiny flower pitcher I once took from a room-service tray.   I’ll cut the butter pats into the shape of something.  A whale, maybe, he likes whales.  Or a Corvette.  If that doesn’t work, I’ll make butter curls with a potato peeler.”

I love French toast.  We see a lot of breakfast presentations with this event, probably because it feels like such a treat.  And in this story, Samantha needs to give her son a treat…since he will soon realize what is missing from his life.  Sad, right?

What are you sharing today?  Tempt us with something we’ll drool over.  Thanks!  This post will be another Guilty Pleasure.

  1. I actually made myself French toast for breakfast yesterday, Laurel-Rain! It’s so, so good! With lots of maple syrup 😀
It is sad that she feels like she should make a treat for Travis because his life will soon be turned upside down, but that’s what parents do, right? Try to make things better in any way they can.
    Thanks for sharing!

    1. I think it’s great when we can treat ourselves…we don’t have to wait for someone to do it for us. And yes, so sad about the mother trying to make it up to the child. But that’s what we do sometimes.

Thanks for hosting…and for stopping by, Lexxie.

  2. Wow, that’s some fancy french toast! 😉 I enjoy making this for my family but I don’t go to such lengths. *ha* I have read Elizabeth Berg and enjoyed her but I haven’t read Open House. I’ll have to check it out. Enjoy your re-read!

    1. Thanks, Brandee….and I’ve never made fancy French toast, either…sometimes I use just plain bread, but I prefer using the right kind…

Open House was one of my favorites by Berg…and it was an Oprah pick back in the day. There was also a Lifetime movie, which I’d love to see again, but I can’t find it anywhere. Christine Lahti was in it (from The Pilot’s Wife and several other movies you might not know…LOL).

      Glad you could stop by….

I love that paragraph and I remember it in that book. I used to love her books! I am always delightfully surprised when you say you are rereading! I do not think I have ever reread! Anything!

    1. I haven’t reread it in a while, Patty, but I got it in Kindle format recently, because, in all my purging, I must have donated my original paperback! Yikes!

Rereading used to happen a lot more…when I didn’t have so many newer books. There is something so comforting about an old favorite.

      Thanks for stopping by.
