Welcome to another Thirsty Thursday & Hungry Hearts, hosted by Lexxie, at (un)Conventional Bookviews.

The idea of Thirsty Thursday and Hungry Hearts is to share a quote with food or drinks that showed up in a recent read, as well as if it’s something you think you’d like or not. Please share the title of the book it happened in, as well as the character who ate or drank the special little something you discovered between the pages of a good read. Please link up beneath, and visit other bloggers who are participating in Thirsty Thursday and Hungry Hearts as well.

Today’s offering is from a book I just started, but I’m enjoying it a lot.  After I Do, by Taylor Jenkins Reid, is the story of a marriage gone off the tracks…and the couple decides to “take a break.”  Not a divorce, but a year-long separation.  Ryan and Lauren are just in the beginning of it, and then…along comes Lauren’s birthday, and she is remembering the past:

“Ryan should be making me dinner tonight.  He is supposed to make me Ryan’s Magic Shrimp Pasta, which is, from what I can tell,  just shrimp scampi.  But it always tastes great.  And we only ever have it on my birthday.  And he always makes it so that I will look forward to my birthday.  Because I get to eat Ryan’s Magic Shrimp Pasta.

“He was able to take me out of my own head.  He was able to make me happier, to change me into a happier person.  And where is he now?”

That birthday dinner she is imagining sounds very special to the two of them…and knowing it won’t happen makes me sad.

But I’m hoping things work out for them.   They are a couple I am rooting for.

  1. That is very bittersweet and sad, Laurel-Rain, but at the same time, memories like these might not have come to the surface if they hadn’t decided to take a break. I love shrimp, and now you made me crave them. I’m preparing dinner now, and we’re having Swiss raclette boiled potatoes and melted cheese to add to the potatoes. Very yummy, too 😉
I hope you continue to enjoy After I Do!

  2. I’m not a seafood eater but I like that Ryan has made her birthday so special – that she looks forward to what he does to make it that way. And I’m also rooting for this couple…if you care enough to make a special birthday treat every year, you care enough to stick it out for the long haul, right? Happy Friday!
