Welcome to some bookish fun today as we share Book Beginnings, hosted by Rose City Reader; and as we showcase The Friday 56 with Freda’s Voice.

To join in, just grab a book and share the opening lines…along with any thoughts you wish to give us; then turn to page 56 and excerpt anything on the page.

Then give us the title of the book, so others can add it to their lists!

If you have been wanting to participate, but haven’t yet tried, now is the time!

What better way to spend a Friday?

I hope everyone had a wonderful New Year’s celebration; mine was great, because I curled up to watch movies and read.

My featured book today is My First Book of 2015:  The Cinderella Murder, by Mary Higgins Clark & Alafair Burke. (Click this link for my review).

Beginning:  It was two o’clock in the morning.  Right on time, Rosemary Dempsey thought ruefully as she opened her eyes and stirred.  Whenever she had a big day ahead she would inevitably wake up in the middle of the night and start worrying that something would go wrong.

56:  It was only when Nicole started to cry that her mother finally turned off the running water, joined them at the table, and grasped both of Nicole’s hands in hers.  “We know you, Nicole.  I know you better than I even know myself, because you’re my baby.  We can’t let you get lost.”

Amazon Description:  Television producer Laurie Moran is delighted when the pilot for her reality drama, Under Suspicion, is a success. Even more, the program—a cold case series that revisits unsolved crimes by recreating them with those affected—is off to a fantastic start when it helps solve an infamous murder in the very first episode.

Now Laurie has the ideal case to feature in the next episode of Under Suspicion: the Cinderella Murder. When Susan Dempsey, a beautiful and multi-talented UCLA student, was found dead, her murder raised numerous questions. Why was her car parked miles from her body? Had she ever shown up for the acting audition she was due to attend at the home of an up-and-coming director? Why does Susan’s boyfriend want to avoid questions about their relationship? Was her disappearance connected to a controversial church that was active on campus? Was she close to her computer science professor because of her technological brilliance, or something more? And why was Susan missing one of her shoes when her body was discovered?

With the help of lawyer and Under Suspicion host Alex Buckley, Laurie knows the case will attract great ratings, especially when the former suspects include Hollywood’s elite and tech billionaires. The suspense and drama are perfect for the silver screen—but is Cinderella’s murderer ready for a close-up?

I am halfway through this book that I started this morning, and if I hadn’t had a nap, I might be finished.  It is a page-turner.  What do you think?  Does it pique your curiosity?

  1. Is this a fairytale retelling!? There are so many Cinderella retellings it’s crazy! This one looks interesting though, a mystery twist? I’m curious! I recently saw your review too, I need to head over and read it 🙂

Have a lovely weekend Laurel 🙂

Ugh I’ve had that happen to me a few times before! Talk about annoying and frustrating! I can sympathize with Rosemary and would want to keep reading to see what the big day was! Thanks for stopping by my blog! 🙂
