SUNDAY POTPOURRI: A TRIP TO THE LIBRARY — AUGUST 25

Welcome to a rather late Sunday Potpourri.  To check out more of my updates, click over to Sunday Updates/Mailbox Monday.

After nice chats with two of my sons, one in person and one by phone, I took off to the library, where I found two books I’ve been wanting to read.

I read an Andre Dubus III book this past week, and years ago, I read House of Sand and Fog.  Now I have The Garden of Last Days.

“So good, so damn compulsively readable, that I can hardly believe it.” —Stephen King, Entertainment Weekly

In his stunning follow-up to the #1 best-selling House of Sand and Fog, Andre Dubus draws us into the lives of three deeply flawed, driven people whose paths intersect on a September night in Florida. April, a stripper, has brought her daughter to work at the Puma Club for Men. There she encounters Bassam, a foreign client both remote and too personal, and free with his money. Meanwhile, another man, AJ, has been thrown out of the club, and he’s drunk and angry and lonely. From these explosive elements comes a relentless, raw, and page-turning narrative that seizes the reader by the throat with psychological tension, depth, and realism.

I love that blurb by Stephen King!

And Revenge Wears Prada, by Lauren Weisberger, is one I’ve been wanting to read.

Almost a decade has passed since Andy Sachs quit the job “a million girls would die for” working for Miranda Priestly at Runway magazine—a dream that turned out to be a nightmare. Andy and Emily, her former nemesis and co-assistant, have since joined forces to start a high-end bridal magazine. The Plunge has quickly become required reading for the young and stylish. Now they get to call all the shots: Andy writes and travels to her heart’s content; Emily plans parties and secures advertising like a seasoned pro. Even better, Andy has met the love of her life. Max Harrison, scion of a storied media family, is confident, successful, and drop-dead gorgeous. Their wedding will be splashed across all the society pages as their friends and family gather to toast the glowing couple. Andy Sachs is on top of the world. But karma’s a bitch. The morning of her wedding, Andy can’t shake the past. And when she discovers a secret letter with crushing implications, her wedding-day jitters turn to cold dread. Andy realizes that nothing—not her husband, nor her beloved career—is as it seems. She never suspected that her efforts to build a bright new life would lead her back to the darkness she barely escaped ten years ago—and directly into the path of the devil herself…

So…what delightful reads are you pondering today?  Do you sometimes grab books from the library rather than add them to your shelves?

I think I’m going to curl up in my slightly rearranged boudoir now.

    1. Oh, it is definitely a stand-alone novel, but probably the most well-known by this author, since it was an Oprah pick a few years ago (when she was doing that on her show). It was also made into a movie starring Ben Kingsley and Jennifer Connelly. A movie that I watch over and over…Thanks for stopping by, Rita.

Ooh…I love the word boudoir…I am imagining you with slip on slippers with kitten heels and furry puff balls! And a robe…silky and flowy! A mimosa next to you and one of these books!

    1. Yes, I like the images conjured up by that word…it brings to mind all the things you mentioned…a boa, too, perhaps. LOL

I used to have silky robes….I need to get another one! But definitely a mimosa nearby would be the way to go. Thanks for the ideas, Patty!
