Today I’m featuring a book I’ll be reading next week:  Is This Tomorrow, by Caroline Leavitt.

Beginning:  (1956)

She came home to find him in her kitchen.  She was in no mood, having spent the whole morning arguing with a lawyer, but there he was, her son’s best friend, Jimmy Rearson, a twelve-year-old kid home from school at three on a Wednesday afternoon with too-long hair and a crush on her, reading all the ingredients on the back of a Duncan Hines Lemon Supreme cake mix, tapping the box with a finger.

56:  “Lewis?” she called, winding her way to the den where he was staring at the magic kit Jake had given him, the wrapping torn into strips.  He blinked at the picture of the grinning man, at the thought bubble that said “Abracadabra!”

Blurb:  In 1956, Ava Lark rents a house with her twelve-year-old son, Lewis, in a desirable Boston suburb. Ava is beautiful, divorced, Jewish, and a working mom. She finds her neighbors less than welcoming. Lewis yearns for his absent father, befriending the only other fatherless kids: Jimmy and Rose. One afternoon, Jimmy goes missing. The neighborhood—in the throes of Cold War paranoia—seizes the opportunity to further ostracize Ava and her son.

  8. Hi Laurel-Rain,

    I haven’t heard about this author before, however I also checked out her previous book and both books are now on my wish list.

    I love the thoughts and images conjured up by the opening lines, although it is probably a much more common phenomenon than I believe it to be. In fact, thinking back to my childhood, there were probably one or two of my friends who had father’s that I had a crush on.

    We have never had any children of our own, so I just can’t begin to imagine how you would deal with that sort of situation…. The synopsis details have me imagining all sorts!
