Welcome to a potpourri of fun today as we share Book Beginnings, hosted by A Few More Pages; and as we showcase The Friday 56 with Freda’s Voice.
To join in, just grab a book and share the opening lines…along with any thoughts you wish to give us; then turn to page 56 and excerpt anything on the page.
Then give us the title of the book, so others can add it to their lists!
Today I’m featuring Whole Latte Life, by Joanne DeMaio, the story of what happens when one woman disappears from her life.
Blurb: Would you leave everything behind to know who you are?
Sara Beth Riley never dreamt she’d walk straight out of her life. Actually she’d never dreamt a lot of things that had happened this year … From being kidnapped by her own best friend, to throwing her wedding rings into the Hudson River, to calling an old love in France, to getting inked with said best friend, painting the passionate constellation of these choices into permanence. But mostly, she could never have dreamt what started it all. How could it be that her mother’s unexpected death, and the grief which lingered painfully long, turned her into the woman she was finally meant to become?
Sara Beth’s escape begins a summer of change – of herself, of marriage, of the lives of those around her. In a story that moves from Manhattan to the sea to a quaint New England town, Whole Latte Life looks at friends we never forget, at decisions we linger with, at our attempts to live the lives we love.
***
Beginning: Rachel checks her watch again, she can’t help it, she’s so hungry. Three hours of shopping does that every time and it’s all she can do not to down half her lunch. Sara Beth just stepped away to fix her hair, but the food’s getting cold now, so she lifts her fork and tastes her lunch, picking at sliced zucchini and carrot.
I like the tension, the sense that something major is about to happen.
***
P. 56: First there were only colors. Browns that never shimmered as beautiful as they did through tears. Beneath the mahogany, oak, cherry and pine antiques spread a sea of gold and burgundy in an oriental carpet.

What are you excerpting today? I can’t wait to find out, so please come on by and leave your comments and links.
That one looks good…and I love the cover…tension in books is usually a good sign…

A book without tension just does not hold my attention for long. This looks like a good one.

This sounds like a really good book – plenty of tension and let’s be honest – who hasn’t dreamed of walking away once in a while…lol

Oh, definitely! I remember a time when I seriously considered it when I was 3000 miles from home on a business trip.
Instead of disappearing, I wrote a short story in which the character does that.
Thanks for stopping by, Maria.

Well, that’s certainly an attention grabber all the way around–from the blurb to page 56. You’ve really got me curious…and I don’t even like latte.
