Welcome to Friday Potpourri, where we share tidbits from books we’re reading…in two events: Book Beginnings, hosted by A Few More Pages, and The Friday 56, led by Freda’s Voice.
To participate, excerpt something from the beginning of a book you’re reading (or about to read), share your thoughts if you wish, and then excerpt from p. 56. Link up at our hosts’ blogs and begin the fun!
Today I’ve grabbed a book from next week’s selections—a book that has been languishing on my TBR piles—and it’s bound to be exciting, since it’s a mystery from Fern Michaels’ Sisterhood series: Weekend Warriors.
Blurb: As Nikki and her best friend, Barbara, are walking, a car comes out of nowhere and kills Barbara and her unborn child. Unfortunately, the driver, a Chinese diplomat, isn’t subject to prosecution. Barbara’s mother, the fabulously wealthy Myra Rutledge, who also raised Nikki, goes into a two-year depression, only snapping out of it when she sees television coverage of the mother of another murdered child taking the law into her own hands. Barbara and Myra recruit five female vigilantes, all victims of a legal system that, in their experiences, favored the criminal. The group’s mission: to right the wrongs perpetrated against them and other women. The first woman to be vindicated is the one who was raped by three white-collar bikers while her disabled husband was forced to watch. Mission Impossible meets Lorena Bobbitt in prolific Michaels’ latest, the first of the Sisterhood series. Readers who grow weary of seeing the bad guys get away with their crimes will enjoy seeing what happens when well-funded, very angry women take the law into their own hands.

Beginning:
Prologue – Washington, D. C.
The traffic was horrendous on Massachusetts Avenue, but then it was always horrendous at this time of the day. Rush hour. God, how she hated those words. Especially today.
Sixteen months later
It was dusk when Nikki Quinn stopped her cobalt-blue BMW in front of the massive iron gates of Myra Rutledge’s McLean estate. She pressed the remote control attached to the visor and waited for the lumbering gates to slide open.
Both of these beginnings tell us a bit about the setting, and in the first one, something about the character’s emotional state.

56: Kathryn whirled around. “Someone’s coming. What should I do?”

Okay…now I want to see some snippets from the rest of you, and I hope you’ll pop on in here and share!
I am getting ready to read Dark Eden by Patrick Carman…here is what drew me in…seven trapped teens…trapped in a dark Eden…an exploration of fear, betrayal, memory and immortality.
What could be more enticing?

This one sounds really interesting. I can understand the desire to take the law into your own hands, but can’t actually imagine doing it

I know…that’s why it’s fun to read about it, huh? I have read several books in this series, but hadn’t read this one…the first of the series.
This book actually has another one included. Two books in one. I’ll be reading that one next week, too.
Thanks for stopping by, Helen.

Hi Laurel Rain,
It’s good to see a book where it is women taking the law into their own hands and exacting revenge.
This is a series that I think I might enjoy, so thanks for highlighting it.
If you enjoy the book hen you come to read it, then you might well enjoy a series of book by English author Martina Cole, which are very much in the same vein, with a hard hitting, vengeful woman at the forefront of the action.

A good opening and thanks for including the blurb. This book sounds interesting, especially the issue of justice for the women involved. One wonders how the two women will go about the mission to right the wrongs perpetrated against them and the other women.
