Welcome to another Friday Potpourri event, spotlighting Book Beginnings, hosted by A Few More Pages; and The Friday 56, led by Freda’s Voice.
To join in, just share opening lines and your reactions (if you like); then turn to page 56 and grab anything at all from that page.
Today I’ve captured a book from next week’s reads: The Most Dangerous Thing, by Laura Lippman.
Blurb: Some secrets can’t be kept…
Years ago, they were all the best of friends. But as time passed and circumstances changed, they grew apart, became adults with families of their own, and began to forget about the past—and the terrible lie they all shared. But now Gordon, the youngest and wildest of the five, has died and the others are thrown together for the first time in years.
And then the revelations start.
Could their long-ago lie be the reason for their troubles today? Is it more dangerous to admit to what they’ve done or is it the strain of keeping the secret that is beginning to wear on them and everyone close to them? Each one of these old friends has to wonder if their secret has been discovered—and if someone within the circle is out to destroy them.

Beginning: They throw him out when he falls off the barstool. Although it wasn’t a fall, exactly, he only stumbled a bit coming back from the bathroom and lurched against the bar, yet they said he had to leave because he was drunk. He finds that hilarious.
***
Now I’m very curious about this character and how he fits into the scheme of things.

P. 56: (from the summer of 1978):
Sometimes the park turned on us, reminded us of its power and immensity. We blustered into mud as deep as quicksand, came home with burrs in our hair, rips in our clothes, scratches on our faces.

So…come on over and share your own tidbits! And have a great weekend….
Hoping this is a good one. I have an on-again, off-again relationship with Lippman’s books. Loved The Girl in the Green Raincoat.

Hi Laurel-Rain,
I haven’t come across this author before, but it sounds like a great story and those first lines wuld definitely make me want to read on.
Is this ‘drunken’ character Gordon before he died? one of the others in the group who is under immense stress? or a complete outsider to the group who has got it in for the group and is resposible for Gordon’s death in some way?
Wow! makes me a very suspicious person, doesn’t it?
Great share … have a lovely weekend

I really like the passage about the park, I know of a place just like that although the mud hasn’t gotten me yet.

Hi,
Thanks for the visit to my blog. This book sounds similar to the one I am reading, Mary Burton’s Senseless. Of sorority sisters, secrets and vengeance.

I’ve been meaning to give Lippman a try (I say that about so many authors, but it will probably be impossible to read everything I’d ever want to read). This sounds interesting!
Thanks for participating in Book Beginnings!
