FRIDAY POTPOURRI — BEGINNINGS & FRIDAY 56 — JULY 29

Welcome to another Friday Potpourri, in which we share tidbits from books we are reading.

Book Beginnings is hosted by A Few More Pages; and The Friday 56 comes to us from Freda’s Voice.

Today I’m sharing snippets from The Astral, by Kate Christensen, an exploration of a middle-aged man’s psyche.

“With her lead character’s name–Harry Quirk–Kate Christensen hands you a road map to her lovely, hilarious, and yeah, OK, quirky new novel, The Astral….  From the precision with which she dissects her characters’ foibles to the Brooklyn landscapes she brings to vivid life, Christensen’s meditation on marriage is viewed through a poet’s eye, and tempered at times with a satirist’s soul.”—Veronique de Turenne, Barnes & Noble Review

Beginning:  Toxic water streamed with gold like the belly of a turning fish:  sunset over Newtown Creek.  Tattered pinkish-black clouds blew overhead in the March wind.

The opening lines continue in this vein, giving us visual images of the setting.  I like the unique descriptions.

P. 56:  She showed absolutely no interest in what I might have wanted.  This should have struck me as ominous, I now suppose, but I was so smitten, I found myself charmed by her frank, untrammeled need for control.

Isn’t that the way it is?  Traits we find intriguing turn out to be the very thing that “does in” the relationship?

What snippets did you find today?  I hope you’ll stop in and share….
