TUESDAY MEMES: MARCH 15

Welcome to Tuesday, the time in the week when we celebrate bookish things, like Teaser Tuesday, hosted by Should Be Reading.

Here’s how it works:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers.

Today’s book is Now You See Her, by Joy Fielding, and spotlights the life of a fifty-something newly divorced woman who lost her daughter two years earlier.  She has gone to Ireland alone, on the occasion that would have been her twenty-fifth wedding anniversary.

Teaser: Ten minutes later, she found herself alone at a tiny table for two inside another traditional Irish pub overlooking the river Lee.  It was dark inside, which suited the mood that was rapidly overtaking her.  p. 6

Now, in a slight departure, just as I did last week, I’m spotlighting an excerpt from one of my own published novels.

Tuesday Teaser, is what some have called this….

Embrace the Whirlwind, by Laurel-Rain Snow (that’s me!), can be found on Amazon.com or at my website.

Book Blurb: How does one person connect to another in a meaningful and satisfying way?  Can a tortured past and tangled family history impede prospects for finding happiness in the future?  The author explores the multidimensional character of Amber Cushing, a young woman whose conflicted relationship with her mother propels her into a whirlwind of bad choices.  Her growing addiction to love pushes her out of control and thwarts any chance at happiness.  But when she begins to explore her own feelings and understand the reasons behind her actions, Amber starts to forgive herself and to forge a brave new future.

In this particular scene, Denise Richardson, a retired social worker who now takes in down-on-their-luck young girls and serves as a nurturing advice-giver, ponders some of her own mistakes from the past.

Tuesday Teaser:  Denise was familiar with impulsiveness disguised and renamed spontaneity.  Living with the wreckage of her own whirlwind adventures had ultimately led to some positive growth, but the price had been high.  But then maybe nothing worthwhile came without a price of one kind or another.  She guessed that the trick was to minimize the costs while absorbing the precious gems at the core of each life lesson.

So those are my tempting excerpts for the day.  What did you choose?  I hope you’ll stop by and share….

  1. I was going to do a teaser for a Maeve Binchy in honor of St. Pat’s week and all things Irish but got distracted. Your choice seems to fit that same mold–strong women characters taking charge of their lives. I like that you’ve started featuring your own work. We readers can never have enough writers that we know–even if in the blogosphere.

My TT is Lisa Genova’s work of fiction “Still Alice” where the central character is diagnosed with early on-set Alzheimer’s. Link: Summit Musings

    1. Thanks, Faye…I am amazed at how, slowly but surely, the other writers in the blogosphere are “making themselves known” to us. I first discovered other writers through the various challenges, but then, a few weeks ago, another blogger did this “teaser” thing with her own work, and I thought: what a great idea!

      Glad you could stop by!

    1. Thanks, Joy…I kind of like the phrase too! It reminded me of how I used to think of myself—spontaneous. Later on, I realized that was just the pretty lie I was telling myself.

      Glad you could stop by.

    1. Oh, I do love pubs, even though I haven’t been to a real Irish one. But my eldest son lived in Ireland for a few months and took many photographs, after which he had a showing around St. Patrick’s Day a few years ago. I have several of those shots in my bedroom. My favorite is of several men hoisting beers in a pub, looking very convivial.

Thanks for stopping by, Beth F.

    1. Oh, I like that, too, Margot. In fact, it’s probably no accident that I’m picking books that feature characters like that. It’s about time we celebrated the “wisdom” and “independence” of later years.

And my own writings, of course, reflect my life journey, so naturally there will be older characters…LOL

      Thanks for stopping by.

    1. Thanks, Alice Audrey…I think the “wisdom” comes from living through lots of experiences. And, as for the first one, a favorite character to me is usually someone who reminds me of friends. Glad you could stop by.

  3. Both of the books seem very interesting, this is what I call “my kind of cereal bowl”. I especially liked the first one – because of it’s setting! Irish pub? Come on! That just sounds sweet!
Thank you for sharing, I really like your website and will be visiting often 🙂

  4. Two great teasers. I like Joy Fielding and a setting in Ireland sounds good.
Your book sounds interesting but I don’t think they’re available here.
