Welcome to Teaser Tuesdays, hosted by Should Be Reading. It is the weekly bookish meme that spotlights tempting excerpts in our current reads.
Here’s how it works:
- Grab your current read
- Open to a random page
- Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
- BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
- Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!
Today I’ll be sharing from a book I received from the Amazon Vine program; it is uncorrected proofs, so some of the quotes or excerpts may change in the final version.
Bitter in the Mouth, by Monique Truong, is an unusual tale of a woman who actually experiences words as tastes.
The truth about my family was that we disappointed one another. When I heard the word “disappoint,” I tasted toast, slightly burned. But when I saw the word written, I thought of it first and foremost as the combining or the collapsing together of the words disappear and point, as in how something in us ceased to exist the moment someone let us down. p. 38
Wow! I thought that was a very telling excerpt, which predicts some very interesting moments to come.
What did you discover this week? I hope you’ll stop by and share….

Here is my teaser from The Trophy Bride’s Tale by Cyrilla Barr (page 1):
I have never seen an execution! I am terrified & tremble uncontrollably now as I stand on the fringes of restless crowd desperately hoping that no one will notice me in my shabby pilgrim’s weeds. At that I saw his face break into a warm smile and I knew I had at last reached safer ground.
