In equal parts funny and serious, Web of Tyranny by Laurel-Rain Snow is a proud, if poignant tale of Margaret Elaine Graham, a woman entangled in the trenches that epitomized her abusive childhood home only to flee into a stultifying marriage with Bob Williams.

Seduced by the hope of achieving her goal of a college education and a life free from domination, she is blinded to Bob’s true qualities—and in a very real sense jumps from the pan into the fire. Oppression begets oppression and as Meg walks a thin line of human betrayal, she learns to stake her own claim to happiness—no matter how high the cost. Her fight leads to politicking during the radical antiwar movement of the 60s and 70s, which manifests as a near-compulsion, which will turn her world on end. Enticed by the possibilities open to her and chafing at the strictures of the marital ties, Meg bolts from the marriage with her toddler son in tow where a whole myriad of troubles await her.

  1. I enjoyed going to the Speedway in Athens, GA with my cousins. We got to stay up late and run around the place. Yes, it was noisy and dirty. lol We had fun.

  3. My favorite summer memory was a day at Avila Beach with my family in 1966. I was 14 and in that snotty teenage mode where family things are so BORING! The day was beautiful and for once my sisters and I didn’t spoil it by petty fighting. I have a photo taken with my Instamatic of all of us on the pier. I’m not smiling, of course–buy I had a memorable time. I treasure it now that most of my family is gone.

  4. Hi Laurel! You are so funny that you linked to my Straight on Through Blog which is just random things about me…. and not One Persons Journey Through a World of Books, which is all about books. ; )

You are going to make me up my game on Straight on Through since I don’t give it the time that I used to. :)

As for a childhood memory from summer… those are tough for me. I guess what comes to mind is one summer when dad was teaching me how to ride my mini bike (oh yeah – what a tom boy I was!) and Tara (my sister) and I road it together around the yard while mom and dad watched. I don’t have many memories of my entire family together (If you read enough of Straight On Through you will pick up on that).

I like the memories I have of all of us. :)

  5. My best memory was when, as a single mom, the boys and I rented a house at Newport Beach, and two of them got in a fight. One threw a punch, the other ducked and we were left with a hole in the door. They stayed up all night fixing the door so we wouldn’t lose our deposit

  6. I loved driving 8 hours to the beach every summer to visit my grandparents. Without fail my mother got lost everytime, and it was always a grand and glorious adventure!

  7. Spending part of the summer at my grandmother’s house in Black Mountain, NC. No bathroom – we had to use an outhouse. I thought it was such an adventure!

  8. My best summer memory is realy a simple one. I rarely got to have quality time with my father. He owned his own business and would leave the house at 6am and not return until after 6pm. Then he did paperwork and wanted to relax watching TV. However, in the summer he would come home from work and asked me if I wanted to go for a dip in Teppley’s pool before dinner. I loved swimming with my Dad!

PS. Teppley’s pool was our neighbor’s pool but they shared it with a few lucky neighbors!

  9. English was not my native language and I could not read books. We did not have any TV back then and I remember one summer when I was about ten years old, and my father used to read “Great Expectations” to the family members every night, and how I enjoyed listening to this story and being safe and with the family, etc.

  10. My best summer memory was spending the summer with my grandma in New Bern, NC. This is my best summer memory because I fully jumped into my writing, seeing that my grandma is also a writer. I’m glad for this summer memory because it helped me to fully figure out what I wanted to do with my life.

  11. One of my best memories was camping with my family in New England. I must have been around 6 and my brother was 4. We were new to the US and hadn’t really gone camping before and my father was very excited to try it. It was great fun to lie in the tent (despite our not having removed all the rocks) and to catch fish and roast marshmallows. We moved back to Asia soon after, so those woods seemed so exotic to us.

  12. I can’t enter the contest because I’m a DAME and I’ve already read this book, but I just wanted to tell you, Laurel, I like the way you presented this contest and the question is excellent.

Thanks for adding so much to our site.

    Hugs – Betty

  13. My favorite moments from my childhood were the way that we shared so much love and we stuck together(my sibling). I think back on how we would go under the house and dig for doodle bugs saying, ‘Doodle-bug, doodle-bug come and get your meat and corn bread’, and a bug would come out of the hole. We would swing from limbs of tree’s and scream like Tarzan and Jane. There was so much love for the neighbor and friends. You could go to sleep in the daytime or night and not have to worry about anyone coming in and helping themselves. I remember staying outside playing until the wee moments of the night and no one bothering you, except for the dogs. Those were truly cherished moments.
